Insomnia is a very common problem that may appear due to psychiatric illnesses, physical illnesses or even without any illness where people suffer from lack of sleep or respiratory problems. A complete diagnosis of insomnia is necessary before prescribing medication. People should be aware that increasing age decreases the amount of sleep. Sleeping in the daytime should be avoided to stay away from insomnia at night. Sleep hygiene is a behavioural component one should maintain. Wake and sleep cycle should be followed thoroughly. Relaxing activities like listening to music or having a bath could be followed or having milk or juice can help. People should avoid having arguments and watching disturbing or fearful movies before bedtime. Regular exercise and relaxing techniques in the daytime help in maintaining good sleep. The ambiance of the sleeping place should be dim and favourable for sleep.
