One of the most neglected parts of a fitness regime for the majority of athletes is flexibility. Flexibility means the suppleness of the body and the muscles which plays a major role in causing injuries during sports. Not only amateur athletes, but even professional and experienced athletes may have a considerable tightness of muscles, especially when it comes to leg muscles, the front of their thigh, the back of their thigh and their calf muscles. When a person’s muscles are tight, they restrict joint motion. Therefore, people can not only have injuries to muscles and tendons because of stiffness, but their joints can be also adversely affected because their muscles and tendons are not flexible. When a person has tight muscles, they do not allow joints to glide freely and the joints end up grating on each other. It is because of this reason that the role of flexibility in a fitness regime is of utmost importance.  <br>Today people are predominantly found to work on strength training as they want to look good and have good muscle bulk. However, unless they have adequate flexibility in joints and muscles, they are likely to suffer from various kinds of injuries. There may be muscle tears, tendon ruptures, the person’s joints can be overloaded and he can have wear and tear of the joints. Therefore, flexibility should be a very important part of a fitness regime. Static flexibility like gradual stretching in yoga plays a great role in restoring flexibility. Athletes, people who exercise and all fitness enthusiasts should concentrate on static flexibility. Yoga is probably one of the best methods to increase a person’s flexibility and overall performance. Dr. Anant Joshi, orthopedic surgeon from Mumbai, Maharashtra discusses the role of flexibility in a fitness regime.
