Microdermabrasion is used to resurface the facial skin to correct age-related issues like wrinkles, spots or hyperpigmentation or acne scars. A handheld device called a microdermabrator pushes the aluminium oxide crystals into the skin by removing its top layer which is repeated once in 4-6 weeks. The vacuum pump sucks up the top layer so that a smooth surface is exposed. The collagen under the skin is remodelled giving a younger appearance.
