The common types of anemia are iron deficiency anemia and folic acid and Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. In the case of iron deficiency, women are given iron tablets to improve their hemoglobin levels. They are also given Folic acid and Vitamin B12. Iron deficiency anemia will not usually cause any birth defects. However, when a woman has B12 or folic acid deficiency, the baby may have neural tube defects as well as other complications. There may be spinal cord and brain issues. Women planning to get pregnant must also check their folic acid and Vitamin B12 levels.
