It is important to know about different symptoms and treatment of diarrhea so that it can be managed effectively. Diarrhea implies loose stools in which the frequency of stools would be eight to ten times in a day when compared to the normal two to three times. A preceding fever along with vomiting is acute gastroenteritis or diarrhea. If there is no blood or mucus then it is a viral diarrhea. The treatment includes two pillars namely ORS and zinc along with a proper diet. It is better to avoid juices or sugary content when preparing the ORS and this is a common mistake done by many people. It is essential to go through the instructions related to using a specific quantity of water while preparing the ORS because excess water may reduce the concentration of the ORS. The prepared ORS must be consumed within 24 hours. In the case of pre-made ORS, there is no extra benefit in consuming it and it is better to go through the composition like 245 mOsm/litre and if it is recommended by the WHO as there are different types of ORS and the pharmacists themselves do not have a clear picture.Dr. Atul Gupta, a pediatrician, speaks about diarrhea symptoms and treatment.
