It is perceived that diabetic patients should not have sugar. However, they can take a very small amount of sugar with tea or coffee as it satisfies and reduces the sugar cravings.  A myth for diabetic patients is that they should not consume underground vegetables and this is not true. Actually simple carbohydrates on digestion immediately break down to monosaccharide glucose  and surge the blood sugar levels. A  major portion of calories in the recommended diet comes from carbohydrates. Hence, the patients should opt for complex carbohydrates as they  take more time in digestion from complex to polysaccharide  and then to monosaccharide glucose. This does not immediately surge blood sugar thereby benefiting the diabetic patients. Dr. Avijit Kundu, consultant in internal medicine and endocrinologist, from West Bengal, gives tips to manage sweet cravings for diabetic patients.
