To prevent iron deficiency in children, it is important to start precautions right from the time the baby is in the womb of its mother. This may be done by giving iron tablets to them during pregnancy. Newborns should be fed breast milk till around the time they are two years of age.  Pre-term babies should be started with iron supplements from the second week and term babies should be given these supplements from the fourth month. Foods provided to them must be rich in iron like spinach, jaggery, pulses, ragi and nuts as these help in prevention of iron deficiency.Dr. K Nagaraj,Paediatrician practicing at Ballari, Karnataka speaks about tips to prevent iron deficiency in children.
