Proper treatment of anorectal malformation is crucial. If the anal canal is absent at birth, it&#039;s crucial to determine whether there is an imperforate anus or whether there is a fistula present from  the rectus to the bladder. MRI and USG radio imaging procedures could be used. If only the anal canal is perforated, a colostomy is performed in the sigmoid colon region within 24 hours of birth, and the lower part of the malformed portion gets mended after two to three months. The fistula tract is removed if it is present. The anal canal and rectum are properly configured using a push-down method.When the surgical wound has healed, which usually takes two to three months, the colostomy wound is stitched up and the rectum and sigmoid colon are anastomosed end to end.Dr. Kausik Goswami, paediatrician from Haldia, West Bengal discusses management and treatment of anorectal malformation.
