For diagnosis of fever in children, oral or rectal temperatures are no longer taken. Temperature is taken from the armpit or the axilla. If the temperature is more than 37.2 - 37.4 degrees centigrade, it is considered a fever. There is no need to try to take oral or rectal temperatures in a child as it is uncomfortable and in some cases dangerous as it may not give an accurate reading of the temperature.
