Stevia is a natural sugar substitute. It is widely used in food products. Its sweetness is 100 to 300 times more than table sugar and has no carbohydrates, calories or artificial ingredients. Stevioside, the end and purified derivative of the Stevia plant, is safe for consumption and has been approved by FDA. Concerning the side effects of stevia, there is a growing concern that consuming raw and unprocessed stevia can affect kidneys, reproductive systems and cardiovascular systems. Some dislike the slightly bitter taste, while few complaint of bloating or diarrhoea. It may also lower the BP or interact with blood sugar-controlling medicines. Dr. Mahesh Rath, a diabetologist from Orissa, speaks on stevia, its benefits and side effects.
