Bacterial vaginosis, also referred to as vaginosis instead of vaginitis, is an alteration of the bacterial flora in the vagina instead of simply being called an infection.  The bacterial flora is generally made of lactobacillus and less than 1% is being made of anaerobes and bacterial vaginosis occurs when this anaerobic bacterial that is less than 1% increases to 100 to 1000 fold. Apart from this increase, there would also be simultaneous decrease of lactobacillus which is considered to be a good bacteria that is responsible for release of hydrogen peroxide that keeps the aerobic and anaerobic bacteria under check. The decrease in lactobacillus and hydrogen peroxide can result in proliferation of anaerobic bacteria especially Gardnerella vaginosis.
