Apart from any other regular wound infections, Diabetic wound infections are different, because there are increased chances in case of diabetes. The possible reasons for this are Sustained Hyperglycemia, Abnormal Activity of the Immune Cells like Abnormal Activity of Macrophages, or an Increased number of Polymorphs, but these polymorphs are not totally functional, they cannot attach to the blood vessel wall, or can migrate outside called chemotaxis. There is decreased liberation of growth factors, abnormal blood vascular flow that is called blood stasis that leads to Local Hypoxia, and all these factors lead to increased chances of infection in Diabetes. Second, there is also delayed wound healing in diabetes, certain infections are more in Diabetes like Tuberculosis, infection with Staphylococcus Aureus, infection with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, etc. A physician should be aware of these organisms and keep them in mind while choosing appropriate Antibiotic Therapy, while both the patient and physician should be proactive when it comes to the treatment of any wound infection in case of Diabetes Mellitus.
