A large abdominal wall hernia needs effective treatment and care so that the situation may be managed well. The size of the hernia is a crucial factor that helps to decide whether open procedures or laparoscopic method is to be used. Abdominal wall hernia more than 10 cm may be difficult to handle by laparoscopy and thus they are preferably treated through the open technique. Large hernias need certain planning about the size of the mesh that is to be used in the surgery and a CT scan is crucial to give an idea about the size of the hernia. Complications of this surgery include pain in the operation site and mesh infections or in some rare cases, recurrence of hernia if the mesh used shrinks inside.
