Our inner and outer environment is filled with air pollutants. These pollutants when inhaled cause adverse impacts on the lungs. Of all the pollutants, the one that is of concern is particulate matter. This matter, especially of size 2.5 to 10 microns enters the lungs and settles down in various parts of the respiratory tract. This, in turn, can cause harm to the respiratory system. In this context, kids are more at risk. Children with allergies are more prone to getting affected due to air pollution as their respiratory tracts are very sensitive. Additionally, often babies fail to cough out the air pollutants. This lets the pollutants remain in the lungs causing long-term side effects. For example, as they become older, they may develop either bronchitis or asthma. Furthermore, patients with asthma must be extra cautious. They must wear masks whenever they go outside, and take their medications on a regular basis because they are more susceptible to air pollution. Hence, it is important to take steps to prevent the production of air pollutants in the environment. In this regard, the first step is to wear masks while going out. The vehicular exhaust should be minimized and there should be the usage of CNG and electric vehicles. Dr. Neeraj Gupta, a pulmonologist from Ajmer discusses the impact of air pollution on lung health.
