Premature delivery are situations where babies are born before the completion of 37 weeks of gestation and different kinds of premature delivery complications are faced by these babies. Premature births have become common and because of the medical facilities, infant survival has increased. There are diverse reasons for premature delivery and it is mostly seen in malnourished mothers due to economic conditions. It needs special medical attention and care. Most premature babies do not have properly developed lungs, skin or digestive systems. These babies suffer from infections due to underdeveloped immune systems and respiratory distress syndrome and may require a neonatal ICU stay, CPAP and ventilation support.Dr. Parikshit Bhattacharya is a pediatrician from Coochbehar, West Bengal.
