Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by a group of parasites known as Plasmodium. It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites a person, it injects Plasmodium parasites into the bloodstream. The parasites then travel to the liver, where they replicate and mature. After this stage, they re-enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells, causing the characteristic symptoms of malaria. Fever is the most common symptom of malaria. This may be accompanied by other symptoms like headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and myalgia or muscle pain. These may be symptoms of viral diseases as well and thus prompt diagnosis and treatment prove crucial for malaria. Early diagnosis and effective treatment help in giving patients a complete cure and this helps to prevent the progression of uncomplicated malaria to more severe conditions.
