Rickets symptoms include situations wherein children develop bowed legs and pigeon chests. Children suffering from rickets have delayed cognitive growth and are generally irritable. The main reason behind rickets is the insufficient vitamin D and calcium levels. The age-old customs of exposing children to the sun allowed enough vitamin D availability for child growth. Also breastfeeding that is replaced with animal milk causes hypocalcemia. As a solution, vegetable oils and other foods are fortified with vitamin D so that rickets can be eradicated in coming generations.  Dr. Punyabrata Mukherjee is a paediatrician and is the Director of Medical Services at the Gouri Devi Medical College and Hospital. He discusses the causes and symptoms of rickets.
