Smoking cause infertility in both males as well as females. Smoking releases free radicals which causes oxidative stress that damage the reproductive system in both males and females.In males the sperm quality, quantity and mobility is affected.In females, the lining of the fallopian tube called cilia that transfers the egg from the ovaries to the uterus is damaged and in the ovaries the egg quality and quantity is affected. Smoking also causes contraction in the red blood vessels and prevents blood circulation to the endometrium in the uterus. In early pregnancy, smoker females have 5-10% extra chances of abortion than non-smoker females due to poor blood circulation. Smoking during pregnancy causes high blood pressure and an IUGR baby. Thus, smoking affects fertility in both males and females.
