There are certain risk factors of tuberculosis which must be known by everybody for prompt prevention. This disease occurs particularly in people who are undernourished or those who have a body mass index less than 18.5. They are found to be at a significantly higher risk of developing tuberculosis. In these cases, they are more than three times higher risk of developing the disease. Similarly, people who have underlying diabetes, people who are smokers, who are addicted to alcohol, are at higher risk of having TB.  <br>Undernutrition in India is probably the most important risk factor that contributes to almost 50% of TB cases in the community. A recent study has shown that by giving nutritional supplementation to the families of TB patients, one could actually reduce the number of new TB cases by 40%. Nutrition plays a very important preventive role here. Having a good nutritional status and having a BMI which is in the normal range, protects a person substantially from TB. However, it is also important to address the risk factors of smoking, alcoholism as well as diabetes as comorbidity. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, pediatrician and former chief scientist at the WHO, discusses the risk factors of tuberculosis.
