Penetrating keratoplasty procedure or full-thickness corneal transplant is a conventional procedure. The entire cornea of the donor is transplanted into the recipient. Penetrating keratoplasty procedure is effective if the cause of blindness is purely corneal and other ocular structures like optic nerve, retina and posterior segments are normal. Penetrating keratoplasty is used as a therapeutic measure for salvaging eyes as in non-healing ulcers or corneal perforations that require eye removal. The structural integrity of the eye is attained through this process.
