Proper care should be taken to protect newborns in cold weather. It is important to keep the babies covered and specifically their heads should be covered well. They should be covered in cotton clothes and thereafter woolen clothes. Their feet should be covered with proper socks so that they remain protected in the cold weather. It is also important to feed the baby every 2-3 hours. Newborns do not need to be bathed everyday. It can be done every alternate day as regular baths may lead to hypothermia and this is more prevalent in case of low birth weight and preterm babies. Warmth is therefore very important for the baby. They have to be cuddled and kept close as this safeguards the newborn baby from the cold weather. Dr. U.
