Chronic Pharyngitis  Chronic pharyngitis is a persistent inflammation of the pharynx that lasts for an extended period, typically lasting for several weeks or even months. It is characterized by a long-lasting sore throat or throat discomfort. Unlike acute pharyngitis, which is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections and resolves within a short period, chronic pharyngitis persists beyond the expected healing time and may have different underlying causes. Causes of Chronic Pharyngitis Chronic pharyngitis generally is a result of continuous exposure of the patient to an allergic or irritant chemical compound. It may be due to something in the food or in the environment where the patient is staying or working. When excess mucus from the nose drips down the back of the throat, it can cause irritation and chronic inflammation. Persistent exposure to allergens like pollen, dust mites or pet dander can lead to ongoing throat inflammation and chronic pharyngitis. Chronic exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke, environmental pollutants or chemicals can cause persistent throat irritation and inflammation. Chronic acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus can lead to irritation and inflammation of the throat.  <br>Chronic tonsillitis wherein there is recurrent or persistent inflammation of the tonsils can also contribute to chronic pharyngitis. It may also be due to a lifestyle problem such as hyper acidity issues. This may cause pharyngeal reflux disease where acidic contents from the stomach come into the pharynx when the patient lies down or intermittently during the day and irritate the mucosa of the pharynx leading to the persistence of pharyngitis symptoms. In these cases, the patient has chronic throat irritation, throat pain, and discomfort and these do not seem to be resolving even with intermittent visits to the doctor.
