A patient&#039;s BP is recorded at night and is tracked by an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring system, which measures it once an hour and every 30 minutes during the day. Nocturnal hypertension is defined by the American College of Cardiology as blood pressure above 65 and above 110. However, the European Society of Cardiology defines nocturnal hypertension as blood pressure above 120 and 70. Due to the circadian rhythm, blood pressure typically dips at night. In people, there is no involvement of a target organ in the normal dipping pattern. However, some people experience extreme dipping, with 20% of blood pressure falling at night, when it should be 10%. Sometimes, the blood pressure doesn&#039;t go down at all at night and stays the same. The ambulatory blood pressure monitoring system is the foundation for all of these data.
