Saltwater has been in medical use for centuries and it is a common practice to gargle with saltwater for easing cold and cough symptoms. It helps in the correction of dehydration and also for cleaning wounds. Gargling with salt water also helps to thin mucus and clear the throat. Saltwater gargling has a soothing effect and helps in clearing the infection and is thus recommended for a sore throat and common cough and cold.
